Barry Parks was charged with creating a new program for all exterior signs at Winston-Salem State University. The project began with a complete inventory of all existing signs on the campus. The commission also called for him to design of a new campus map.
The signage system that emerged called for the recognition that most people arrive on campus in vehicles, so first priority was to establish the campus precinct with street signs that referenced the campus and a monumental marker (right) at each vehicular entrance point to campus.
These were given sequential numbers and provide a list of primary destinations accessed from that point. Once on campus, vehicles are segregated by occupant: student, faculty, and guest. Once on foot, pedestrians require directional and reinforcement signs to move them from car to the correct building and confirmation once arrival is achieved.
Since the signs must meet the North Carolina bidding requirements for state entities, the system had to utilize commonly available components. The system has been adopted and is being instituted in phases.
