An extensive list of architects and architectural firms were involved in this long-term and complex addition at Westover Church in Greensboro. Architect Barry Parks played a lead role in two parts of this work. While at one firm, he authored the initial master plan for this work. The initial plan scope included a 2,300-seat sanctuary, numerous classrooms, and associated support spaces, placed in relationship to the existing campus facilities. After Parks left that firm to begin Trinity Architecture & Planning, the master plan was modified as the scope grew to 2,800 seats and design development work continued with a new designer. Five years later, Parks was called on to assist with the project again.
Focusing only on the worship space within the building shell, he was responsible for coordination with work of technical consultants, including theatrical lighting, curtains, video, sound, acoustically-treated air handling equipment, etc. Parks was responsible for creating the construction drawings for the sanctuary, with special emphasis on redesign of the stage and stage-support areas, balconies and balcony access, and ceiling/catwalk systems. The project cost was $28M.
