An addition to double the original 73,000 square foot research laboratory building for the School of Medicine was completed in 1997 at a cost of approximately $15 million.
The original facility included a small administrative office pod which had to be maintained until replaced by new. Existing research in the laboratories had to be maintained throughout the construction period. Given these constraints, the project was broken into two phases. The first constructed a four story office block to the side, while the second, constructed after the removal of the original offices, added a three-story rotunda atop a first floor conference room. This served as a link to a new lateral wing with laboratory spaces, research staff offices, and enlarged mechanical support. The rotunda provides a visual link to the hospital a block away. The floor of the atrium became the canvas for an installation of terrazzo commissioned as part of a “half percent for art” program. The original architect developed the project into schematics then it was handed over to Barry Parks and another architect to complete.
