Green Street Baptist Church

Phase 1:  Architectural Design Associates had created a master plan that showed a curved building for a new children’s education building. It was up to Barry Parks to make the geometry work while avoiding an existing bell tower.

This three-story building is perched on a slope yielding a three-story elevation from the parking lot, but only a two story presence in the newly created courtyard. The building includes 32 classrooms, a resource room, library, administrative offices and staff lounge on either side of a light-filled central atrium that extends through all three floors.

A smaller two-story addition was made on the narthex of the main building to provide needed lobby space. The former narthex area was opened up to the sanctuary and tiered to provide additional capacity in the worship space.

This work added 52,300 square feet at a cost of approximately $6.7 million.

Phase 2:  After the success of the new children’s education building, Green Street decided to replace an existing gymnasium with a new one in the same location. The new building is connected to the education building via a new bridge that brings one to the upper level of the Christian Life Center with its wrap-around walking track. This level is also lined with school science classrooms, general classes, and a large youth assembly room.
Below those classes are other spaces that can be subdivided into classes by the use of
demountable walls. When opened, this space provides room for portable bleachers. A permanent room provides space for childcare.
Along the wall adjacent to the existing facility, the existing kitchen has been expanded and a new service line added within the new enclosure. A large stage area is placed along one side of the high-school-sized basketball court. This fronts restrooms and storage areas. A game room, exercise room, and office area, as well as the main entry lobby are located along the fourth side. The building covers 43,000 square feet and cost $4.3 million.
